Booking a wedding videographer is not the same as booking a DJ or a caterer. You’re trusting this person with something you can never redo. So before you sign anything, here are the questions you really should ask.

1. Can I See a Full Wedding Film?

Not just the 90-second Instagram reel. Ask for a full wedding film — ceremony, speeches, reception. This tells you so much more about their actual work, their pacing, their audio quality, and how they tell a story.

2. Will You Be the One Filming Our Wedding?

Some larger companies send whoever is available. You want to know exactly who is going to be there on your day. If you’re booking based on someone’s portfolio, make sure that same person is the one showing up.

3. How Do You Handle Audio at Outdoor Ceremonies?

This is really important especially for Colorado mountain weddings where wind can be brutal. Ask if they use wireless lapel microphones. Ask how they handle audio backup if something goes wrong. Bad audio can ruin an otherwise beautiful film.

4. What’s Your Backup Plan If Something Goes Wrong?

Equipment breaks. It happens. What do they do? Do they have backup cameras? What happens if they get sick? These are uncomfortable questions but very important ones.

5. How Many Videographers Will Be There?

One videographer can only be in one place at a time. Two videographers means one can be with the bride getting ready while the other is with the groom. It also means better coverage during the ceremony and reception. Ask what’s included and if adding a second person is an option.

6. What Is Your Turnaround Time?

Some videographers take 6 weeks. Some take 6 months. You want to know realistically when you will receive your film. Also ask if they send a preview or teaser before the full film is ready.

7. How Do You Handle Drone Footage?

If your venue is near a national park or restricted airspace (this is very common in Colorado), drone footage may not be allowed. Ask if they’re FAA certified and if they’ve flown at your specific venue before.

8. What Exactly Is Included in This Package?

Don’t assume. Ask specifically. Does it include a highlight film only, or also the full ceremony recording? Are speeches included? How long is the highlight film? What format do you receive it in?

9. Have You Filmed at Our Venue Before?

A videographer who has been to your venue knows where the light is, where they can and can’t set up, and what the logistics look like. It makes a real difference, especially at complex venues with multiple locations on the property.

10. What Is Your Style and How Would You Describe Your Approach?

Listen carefully to this answer. Do they talk about chasing real moments? Or do they talk about directing and posing? Neither is completely wrong, but you want someone whose approach matches how you want your wedding to feel on film.

“A good videographer will welcome all of these questions. A great one will have already thought about the answers.”
