When you start looking at wedding videographers, you’ll keep seeing two words — “documentary” and “cinematic.” Sometimes they use both in the same sentence. And it can be confusing because honestly, a lot of videographers use these words without really explaining what they mean.

So here’s a simple breakdown.

What Is Cinematic Wedding Videography?

Cinematic style is heavily influenced by movies. Think dramatic slow motion, lots of color grading that makes everything look moody or warm or golden, big sweeping drone shots, and music that builds and drops like a film score.

It looks incredible. It’s very produced. And some couples absolutely love it.

The downside? Sometimes it can feel a little less personal. Like you’re watching a very beautiful commercial about your wedding rather than your actual wedding.

What Is Documentary Wedding Videography?

Documentary style is more about capturing things as they actually happen. Less directing, less posing, more observing. Your videographer is moving around quietly, catching the look your dad gives you when he sees you in your dress, the way your partner laughs when they’re nervous, the moment one of your grandparents starts crying.

It feels more real. More personal. Less Hollywood, more human.

Which One Is Better?

Neither. It really depends on what you value.

If you want a film that looks visually stunning and feels big and dramatic — cinematic might be for you. If you want something that feels like actually reliving your wedding day — documentary style might suit you better.

Most videographers today actually do a mix of both. They capture real moments documentary-style, but they also put thought into composition, lighting, and editing the way a filmmaker would.

What We Do at Ampersand Family

We call our approach Intentional Storytelling. It’s documentary at the heart — we don’t direct or pose you — but we’re very intentional about how we move, where we are, and how we edit your story. We want your film to feel real and beautiful at the same time.

We’re not trying to make your wedding look like a movie. We’re trying to make it look like your wedding — just captured in the most honest and beautiful way we know how.

“The most emotional moments in a wedding film are never the ones that were planned. They’re the ones that just happened.”

Questions to Ask When You’re Figuring Out Style

  • Do you direct us during portraits or do you let things happen naturally?
  • How much slow motion do you typically use?
  • Can I see an example of a less dramatic, more natural edit?
  • How do you choose the music for a film?

Not sure which style fits your wedding? We can show you examples of different approaches and talk you through what might work best for your day, your venue, and your personality.
